Choosing Ladies Formal Wear
When choosing formal wear, be it for a wedding or a stunning ball, the size is as important as the style and colour. For example, you certainly would not think of wearing that beautiful cream silk dress at a wedding as you would risk over shadowing the Bride!
It’s quite hard to choose a gown without help, so it is always worth shopping with a friend or visiting a store who can give you access to a personal shopper. They can help you buy or hire a dress that is just right for the occasion – after all you will stick out like a sore thumb if you are over dressed at an informal event, or casually dressed at a formal occasion.
Buying or hiring formal wear doesn’t have to be a pricey affair. Stores often have last season gowns and dresses in the sale aisle and they are not always in the sale because they are no good, it’s often because the store is introducing a new range and needs to make space for new products.
A Formal Wear Guide
For a formal occasion, it is tradition to wear a long dress. A less formal event may require a cocktail dress length that reaches the knee or is long.
Always consider the type of event as the dress you choose is not only about you but about what is required at the event. Don’t try to overdo your look as you risk over shadowing the host, so for a wedding try to avoid white and at someone’s birthday avoid buying or hiring the same dress or colour as the birthday girl.
Don’t reveal too much – a little cleavage is fine but a buxom chest on show and an over short dress with a low back is overkill, although we don’t think you have to be completely covered up, ladies should not show too much flesh.
Some people choose to cover arms with an accessory like a shawl or scarf, or select a more modest dress so that assets aren’t on show.
Dress a subtle outfit with stylish accessories or a stunning hair do. A glamorous formal dress can be accessorised with understated jewellery and a simple hairstyle. Shoes, flat or heeled, should be as elegant as the dress, in an appropriate colour.
If you’re in any doubt on what to wear, get advice from a shop stylist or personal shopper, and always ask the host about the clothing that is acceptable at the event. That way you can be entirely sure that the outfit you wear is suitable, and you will feel comfortable in the knowledge that you have chosen a stylish outfit that is not going to outshine the person the event is to honour.
